Key Executives
| David J. Horazdovsky
President and Chief Executive Officer
David began his term on July 1, 2003. He joined the Society in August 1978, after receiving his B.A. in Hospital Administration and Sociology at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. Horazdovsky served as an Administrator for the Society at Windom and East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and at Eugene, Ore., from 1978 until 1989, when he became Regional Director for the State of Minnesota. Prior to his current position, he served as Vice President for Advancement, Support and Planning from 1994 to 1997, Vice President for Operations from 1997 to 2002, and Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from January 2002 to July 1, 2003. He was a member of the Society’s Board of Directors from 1985 until 1989. | 
| Cynthia L. Moegenburg
Vice President for Regional Operations
Cynthia assumed her current position on March 1, 2002. In this capacity, she oversees the work of the Society’s 12 Regional Directors and Regional Operations Services. She joined the Society in January 1973 as a staff nurse at the Good Samaritan Center in Laurens, Iowa, and later served as Director of Nursing at Laurens and then as administrator of the Good Samaritan Centers in Laurens and Newell, Iowa. In 1990, Moegenburg joined the national campus staff as Regional Director for the Kansas Region. In 1992, she returned to Iowa as administrator of the Van Buren Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua and then transferred to the Sioux Falls Good Samaritan Village in 1996. She was named Regional Director for Southern Minnesota in 1997. Prior to joining the Society, Moegenburg attended Westmar College, LeMars, Iowa, and completed a Registered Nursing program at the Ramsey School of Nursing, St. Paul, Minnesota. She later earned a degree in Health Care Administration from Ankeny Community College, Des Moines, Iowa. | 
| Raye Nae Nylander
Vice President for Financial Services, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer
Raye Nae Nylander assumed her current position Jan. 1, 2002. Before serving in her current role, Nylander was Senior Division Director for Financial and Payment Systems with the Society. Prior to joining the Society in 1992, she worked for Gold Medallion and Good Neighbor, where she held positions as Accounting Manager, Controller and Vice President of Accounting/Controller. Nylander has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from National American University in Rapid City, South Dakota. She is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and has participated as a committee member with the American Health Care Association and its state affiliates. | 
| Neal Eddy
Vice President for Learning and Strategic Integration
Neal joined the Society in September 1995, and was appointed to his current position in 2001. Prior to his present position he served the Society as Division Director for Resource Development and also as Senior Associate to the President for Strategic Integration. Prior to joining the Society, Eddy was Vice President for Student Services at the University of Sioux Falls, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Executive Vice President at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D; and Assistant Director for Institutional Services at Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls, S.D. During his last year at Dakota Wesleyan he served as Acting President. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Sioux Falls and both master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado. He has also received a Certificate in Management from the American Management Association and participated as a Bush Fellow in a College Management program at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa. | 
| Thomas J. Kapusta, Esq.
Vice President for Legal, Audit and Compliance Services
Thomas joined the Society in March 2000 and serves as chief legal officer for the organization. In this role, he provides strategic leadership for Society legal, internal audit and compliance services. He also coordinates and manages Society legal activity and supervises staff and outside counsel. Further, he provides specialized legal advice in the area of health-care law and regulation. Kapusta received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in English and philosophy, his Juris Doctorate degree from Marquette University School of Law, a Certificate in Health Law and Policy from Pace University School of Law and a Master's of Law in Health Law from Loyola University-Chicago School of Law. He has also received a Certificate in Management from Marquette University and a Certificate of Achievement in Environmental Law and Policy from the George Washington University National Law Center. He is admitted to practice in the States of Connecticut, Illinois, South Dakota and Wisconsin. | 
| William Kubat
Vice President for Resident, Community and Quality Services
William joined the Society in 1977. For approximately 16 years, he served as administrator for Society centers in Albion, Neb.; Beatrice, Neb.; and Las Cruces, N.M. In May 1993, Kubat became the Society’s Regional Director for the eastern states, and he assumed his current position in June 1995. From 1991 to 1993, Kubat was a member of the Society’s Board of Directors and currently serves as chair of the Society’s Ethics Committee. He received his bachelor’s degree from Marquette University and his master’s degree from the University of North Texas. Kubat served on the National Quality Forum’s Steering Committee that identified for CMS the publicly reported Quality Measures for long-term care. He has served on numerous committees for the American Health Care Association and its state affiliates. | 
| Dean Mertz
Vice President for Human Resources
Dean earned a bachelor’s degree in public health at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., in 1977. He also obtained a master’s degree in management with an emphasis on human relations and organizational behavior at the University of Phoenix, graduating in 1987. Mertz was administrator at nursing centers in Wymore, Neb.; Prescott, Ariz.; Kaneohe, Hawaii; and Palm Desert, Calif. At the Society’s National Campus, he has held the positions of Regional Director for the Southwest Region and Director for Administrative Personnel. On May 1, 1993, Mertz was appointed to his current position. Mertz is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management at the national level. | 
| Rev. Greg Wilcox
Vice President for Mission Effectiveness and Senior Pastor
Rev. Greg Wilcox became a Certified Nursing Assistant in 1980 and worked part time for a number of years as a CNA. He was ordained a Lutheran clergyman in 1983 and served a parish in northern Minnesota for five years. He joined the Society in 1988, and served as Director for Spiritual Ministries prior to being named a vice president in 1998. Rev. Wilcox is a member of Lutheran Services of America and the Lutheran Long-Term Care Chaplains’ Network. He has developed Good Samaritan’s curriculum for lay ministry, the STAR Program, as well as its culture change movement, Christian Communities of Care. He leads retreats, seminars and workshops on the subjects of spirituality and aging. He received his bachelor’s degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. and a Master of Divinity degree and Doctor of Ministry degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. | 
| Rustan (Rusty) Williams
Vice President for Information Services and Technology
Rustan (Rusty) Williams joined the Society in June 1997. Prior to joining the Society, he served as Chief Information Officer for the Multi State Hospital Division of Adventist Health Systems in Orlando, Fla. Williams has spent the last 25 years working in health care, serving in different application development and management positions. He received a bachelor’s degree in business and administration and an associate’s degree in computer science from Southeastern Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He is a member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), Center of Aging Services Technology (CAST) and has served as a committee member with the American Health Care Association (AHCA). Williams is a frequent speaker at many healthcare and technology events throughout the country. | 
| Dan Holdhusen
Vice President for Operational Support Services and Public Affairs
Dan joined the Society as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer in 1992. He was named to his current role in January 2002. Holdhusen earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northern State University in Aberdeen in 1974. He worked as an auditor for the State of South Dakota from 1974-1977, then became Chief Financial Officer of Missouri River Energy Services, a consumer-owned energy company based in Sioux Falls, S.D. He held this position until 1987, when he became General Manager/CEO. | 
| Charles Hiatt
Good Samaritan Foundation Executive Director
Charles Hiatt, Executive Director, The Evangelical Good Samaritan Foundation, has been with the Foundation since August 2002. He attended the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Sioux Falls (B.A., 1971), North American Baptist Seminary in Sioux Falls (M.Div., 1974) and Arizona State University (Ph.D., 1995). In his previous professional career, he served as a parish pastor, 1974-1979; Vice-president for Development (1979-1982) and President (1982-2000) of North American Baptist (NAB) Seminary; and Executive Director of the Leadership Foundation of NAB Seminary, 2000-2002. |
